About
This project will address several problems in the Bunker Hill area of U.S. 101. The Flanagan Street traffic signal was installed in the 1980s and is near the end of its design life. Traffic congestion is a common problem for vehicles attempting to turn from southbound U.S. 101 onto Coos River Highway. The sidewalks in this area are cracked and in poor condition, and the curb ramps do not meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The project will make several changes to help improve safety and the flow of traffic through the area.
Flanagan signal: The traffic signal at Flanagan Street will receive new poles and hardware. The wires that hold the signal heads will be replaced with mast arms that are more stable in windy conditions. The streetlight at the southeast corner of the intersection will be replaced.
Streetlights: Seven other wooden streetlight poles will be replaced with metal poles, and some will be moved to new locations to provide better nighttime visibility.
Turn lane storage: The U.S. 101 travel lanes will be adjusted and the concrete islands reconstructed to provide more storage room for southbound vehicles turning left onto Coos River Highway.
Pedestrian crossing: A new pedestrian crossing will be constructed along the northbound side of U.S. 101 through the concrete islands at the Coos River Highway intersection. Push-button beacons will be installed for pedestrians.
Sidewalks: ADA curb ramps will be installed at the Flanagan Road, Hill Road, Center Road and Mullen Road intersections. All sidewalks along the northbound side of U.S. 101 will be replaced between Edwards Road and Flanagan Road.
Paving: The northbound U.S. 101 lanes will be repaved between Edwards Road and Flanagan Road. The intersection of Coos River Highway and Mullen Road will also be repaved.
